i am getting pretty fed up with hearing all of the cavalier alumni criticize the scouts. it seems to me that everything they are saying is complete blasphemy. i've seen both corps this year and i've seen them both rehearse etc. so i am no stranger to their programs. first i hear that they are being scored lower this year because they don't play their instruments that well. not only do the scores not back that up (the visual is what kills them), but anybody with ears knows that is totally untrue. when comparing your cavaliers to the scouts hornline it is obvious that their music is far more difficult. the cavies play one melody over and over and only once or twice do they have technical runs like those that are so prevolent in the madison show. i know that some of you will now bring up tone quality and intonation, but guess what? madison has those as well. plus, their drill is not as bad as everybody thinks it is. granted it may not be as complex as some corps (this one included) but it is effective, challenging, and makes the audience say "wow" many times. seems pretty good to me. then there are those of you that feel the need to criticize the value that they place on tradition. somebody even went so far to say that they should abandon their trademark field entrance. it's a trademark, that's why they do it every year. perhaps the cavaliers should stop yelling "splooie" before shows. it's not like the cavaliers never do the same thing year after year. as a matter of fact, i always see many of the same drill moves appear year after year. every corps does things like this because it is what makes up their identity as a corps. madison knows they are talented and they also know that they probably won't win, but it's not their fault. take a closer look at the judging and the politics now becoming a part of dci. the scouts just have so much pride that they don't want to change for anybody but themselves. once again, let's look at this years show. "frameworks" is definitely not the same type of show that we have seen from the cavies in the past but nobody criticizes them. it's funny because here on the cavalier boards abandoning tradition is called "evolving" or "growing" as a corps, and according to some of you this is something madison needs to do. however, i seem to recall another term for doing something different to please others or gain recognition, "selling out." let me close by saying that i am a cavalier fan and i do have a lot of respect for the corps, just not for the biased, thickheaded, people that feel the need to bash another corps behind their backs. now, bring on the responses. by the way, i probably won't write back to many of you because many will be to set in their ways to even acknowledge the truths that i would set before them.
