I was looking over my diary for 1963 because FMM Mitch Markovich asked for some details about our trip to Seattle for VFW Nationals. I stumbled into this bit of trivia....

Did you guys know that the following year in Cleveland wasn't the first time in the 1960s that we got a 3rd place finish behind the Royal Aires and the Kilties? Nope, it was in Momence, August 10, 1963. Here are the scores:

Kilties - 79.8
Royals - 79.7
Cavies - 79.4

My comment was, "We were bad!"

Backing up a bit to Legion State, some of you might be interested in what I wrote verbatim, so I'll let 16-year-old Curt take over:

"August 3rd, 1963 - There was a lot of money riding on 1st place at American Legion State this year. In fact so much was the sum that the Royal Aires had to win or else forget VFW Nationals [in Seattle].

"Our spirit was poor, [little Curt's reason is irrelevant]. As a result, our show stunk, but somehow we managed to win by .5. Memorable quote before we won: 'The Royal Aires' first place at A. L. State is a fixed position,' Paul Litteau [color guard]."

Does anybody remember this? Was there really a ton of $$$ on this show, enough to finance the Royals' trip to Seattle? And they lost! No wonder they didn't go.

Hope you enjoyed this bit of Cavalier history. I now return you to your regular programming....

Curt
