Marching fundamentals - Cavvies' glide step

Hey, guys. I'm a Cavviephile future band director from Northeast Arkansas, and I'm really curious about the teaching behind The Cavaliers's awesome glide step/roll step/whatever-you-call-it step.Around here everyone teaches this all-tense-all-the-time way of rolling your feet, and it's very painful and not very effective. Some other corps look like they march the same way and it makes me wince. The Cavvies, though, have this awesome-looking, relaxed glide that's especially evident in smaller step sizes.
From what I can tell from the videos, it looks like teaching the step would emphasize the knees rather than the feet, perhaps saying to step with the knee first? In any case, I've never been exposed to a step like that before, and if any former Cavaliers or current members/staff could give me some insight into the teaching and technique behind it, I'd really appreciate it.
On the other hand, if it's a closely-guarded Cavaliers trademark, I understand that too. :)
Thanks,
LH
