During the first full weekend of 2012, students from both near and far assembled in Rosemont, Ill., for The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps’ January Call-Back Camp for Brass and Percussion. Set in surprisingly mild weather for January in the Midwest, the corps used this three-day camp (Jan 6-8) to continue evaluating prospective and returning members after two successful Clinic/Audition Camps in Chicago and Austin, Texas.
"The weekend in Rosemont gave our brass and percussion hopefuls an opportunity to demonstrate all the hard work they’ve put in since we saw them last in 2011," said Corps Director Adolph DeGrauwe. "This is also a chance for us as an organization to share how we approach everything from rehearsal structure and technique to corps meetings and meals."
Impressed by the accomplishments leading up to and during the January camp, Percussion Caption Head Dr. Brian Tinkel expressed his enthusiasm for the 2012 season. "The program is in a very healthy place right now, with better talent throughout and a number of members who are eligible to return for multiple years." During the winter camps, Tinkel and his percussion team stress awareness and accountability, individual quality of sound, rhythmic accuracy and tempo maintenance.
"We help our students understand exactly what it takes to head into the summer as best prepared as possible," added Tinkel. "Retention and application of information, whether from last camp or five minutes ago, will help all our performers grow as mature musicians."
2012 Production Takes Shape.
Scott Koter, Dr. Andrew Shanefield, Michael McIntosh and Richard Hinshaw of the corps’ Design Team used the camp weekend to continue development of the 2012 program. "The brass had a great start reading through two minutes and 45 seconds of the first movement," said Shanefield. "I’m very encouraged by the musicians and the staff, as well as the overall direction of the show." A draft of the second movement was reviewed by the Design Team and will soon be ready for the brass. The percussion will read through the opener by McIntosh and Alan Miller at its next camp.
The corps is moving closer to solidifying the brass and percussion roster for 2012. Members of the brass section who were invited back will attend a brass-only camp the weekend of February 17-19, while the percussion section will hold its own camp the weekend of February 24-26. Both February camps will be held at Rosemont School in Rosemont, Ill. The color guard will rejoin the corps during the April 27-29 camp in the Chicago area.
