Pre-Camp Statement from our Medical Team
An ounce of prevention...

Thursday, November 12th, 2009 - 11:12 PM

Gentlemen:

Attached is a statement that I have received from our medical group, whose opinion I highly respect. Our medical team has been very successful at taking very good care of us. We have not had any epidemics or had to pull out of any contests.

The Cavaliers' management team highly recommends that you follow the medical teams suggestions. Keep in mind that you will be travelling with 200 people in close quarters this summer.

Thank you for your consideration in this serious health matter!

Adolph DeGrauwe
Corps Director

----------------------------------

The Cavaliers Medical Group STRONGLY recommends, yet cannot require, that potential members, volunteers and staff protect themselves and the corps by receiving the 2009 seasonal and the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines. The former vaccine is available now before audition camps. The latter vaccine should be available during the winter months of 2010 but certainly before move-in in May. The flu vaccines may be obtained from your family physician, drug stores like Walgreen or CVS, college campus health services, or city and/or county health department clinics.

Influenza is VERY contagious and can be a very serious illness especially in teenagers and persons with underlying illnesses like asthma or diabetes. Symptoms of the "flu" may include one or more of the following:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Here are preventive steps that you can practice to minimize your risk of contracting or spreading the virus.

  • COVER your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or cough into your elbow if no tissue is available
  • WASH your hands often with soap and water or alcohol based hand rub
  • AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • AVOID close contact with people including hugging and shaking hands
  • REST and stay well hydrated
  • AVOID sharing food, drinks and utensils
  • GET VACCINATED
  • IF YOU ARE SICK, PLEASE STAY HOME for at least 24 hours until your fever is gone.

THIS MEANS DO NOT COME TO CAMP IF YOU ARE ILL.

Please notify the Cavaliers office if you have flu like symptoms and reschedule for another audition camp. FLU IS A SERIOUS AND
CONTAGIOUS DISEASE AND WE NEED TO MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO KEEP THE CORPS (that means you) AS HEALTHY AS POSSIBLE.
