Spencer Merryfield

Spencer Merryfield, a Kansas City native, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Kansas and studied trumpet with Steve Leisring. During his time there, he was a member of various athletic bands, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble I, Wind Ensemble, and Trumpet Ensemble, performing everywhere from the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland to the Presidential Inauguration Parade for Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.

Spencer began his teaching career at Murchison Middle School in Austin, Texas. He led concert ensembles to consecutive “Sweepstakes” ratings at UIL Contest and taught beginning instrumental classes and the jazz band. Spencer then worked as the Assistant Band Director at Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park, Kansas. At West, he worked with Cheryl Lee to lead the marching band to back-to-back Kansas Bandmasters Association State Championships. Under his direction, the Symphonic Band was selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association state conference.

Spencer performed with the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps and was on the brass staff for the Colts and Genesis organizations. He resides in Madison, Wisconsin and is thrilled to be teaching the Cavaliers hornline for the 2024 season.
